Victoria Winter Mixer 2013

Saturday, December 7, 2013 - Sunday, December 8, 2013
Host club:
Victoria Bike Polo
Contact info:
shannon@rocketships.ca, 250 884 7750
Court size:
2 courts, standard basketball size

We play polo on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and we're hard and tough! Come play with us in the Winter mixer this December.

Those who arrive early are invited to tea and crumpets (bring your own beer) at Ryan's house in Fernwood on Friday the 6th, at 7ish.

The ball drops at 9:30 am and play ends when there's a winner or when no one can take it anymore.

The winning team and the losing team will be awarded t-shirts during the post-polo kegger at our home shop, Recyclistas.

To keep things interesting, we're going to draw teams out of a hat at the beginning of the day. Location is Victoria High in Fernwood, Victoria, BC. We have two courts and lots of boards.

A couple of our members have big houses with spare rooms that people can crash in, so email me (shannon@rocketships.ca) or call 250 884 7750 if you want to stay overnight.

UPDATE: Date is changed. 6th to the 8th - that way we get 2 full days of polo.

We are looking for volunteers to commit to either coming early on Friday or staying late on Sunday to help set up and tear down. Email if you're into that.

Registration fee is 15 dolla per head.

UPDATE 2: Our location is confirmed, hurray!

Don't forget to email me to get on the billet list so we know how many couches/beds/bits of floor we'll need to find. Ryan has room for 15 and I know a lot of people are staying with non-polo friends, but we can come up with more space if needed.

Order of events is like this:

Friday from 5pm: Set up boards. 5 or 6 volunteers.

Friday night: Tea and crumpets (BYOB) at Ryan's house, at 2632 Scott Street.

Saturday before 9:30: Set up court.

Saturday at 9:30. Ball drops.

Saturday at 6: Tear down court, head to bike shop.

Saturday night: Party at Recyclistas. New Groovement is playing. 5 bucks a cup for donations to the band.

Sunday before 9:30: Set up court again.

Sunday 9:30-6: Play polo! Winners will be picked at noon, then we'll play til the light goes.

Sunday after dark: Anyone who still has enough juice to play can keep going at Fernwood Community Center, where there are lights. Tear down court, then pack you beautiful people off to the ferryboats.

UPDATE 3:

If you arrive before 6 on Friday night, get yourself to Recyclistas (25 Crease Ave.) and check in with Ryan.

Only 2 weeks left, I'm getting excited. We've got trophies now. There's still room for a few more people to squeeze in. Entries are capped at 40 people. Omgomgomg polo. Have I mentioned this is my first tournament? STOKED.

Are we supposed to sign up somewhere other than the LOBP site or e-mail someone to register, etc?

Crab shots.

If you need housing, you should email me. shannon at rocketships ca. Otherwise just sign up on LOBP.

Dear Ryan, Cordelia, Shannon, and all those involved with victoria bike polo,

Thanks for the amazing tournament. You are some tough cats for putting up with the cold snap, while unloading and building two courts on friday night at 8pm in the dark with temps below(in faranheit, 30 degrees, in celcius, 5 degrees?). Everything ran smoothly. The trophies were amazing and I lusted for them all weekend. Ryan/Cordelia, your house is amazing and I did my best to clean, pick up and leave a zero impact if possible. Shannon, thanks for hosting a tournament and running it quite smoothly. Everything from food to boards to organization was smooth. Woadie/Chris: thanks for being my second place teammates. I knew I'd get a fun team to play with, but woadie's smile at the end of everything was worth it, and knowing chris is only going to get better and better has me excited. Vancouver-ites: you are all amazing people and it means something special to me to know you are like my extended family and all i have to do to visit you all is cross the border and visit you three hours away. People like Robbie, TJ, were really fun to hang out with. CALGARY: wayto show up guys, you travelled the furthest and for that it was worth recognizing.
one final round of applause for the victoria bike polo crew for throwing the frostiest tournament I've played in. Now throw a summer bbq and I'll come back with short shorts, t shirts and a towel.
much love,
maxxx

My second mixer (1st being LA5 Boot Camp) and I'm a fan! That was great, and I so appreciate all the dedicated people making all the shit happen.
I've a lot of feelings for all of this past weekend and hope to see all your lovely faces again in more fun tournaments!

Anyone have pictures? Let's have at 'em!

Max! Can I haz patches now?

Jesse

Thank you to everyone who rode ferryboats and aeroplanes to get here, who helped carry thousands of pounds of wood for the boards, and who played polo with talent and enthusiasm, for making this tournament amazing.

If you weren't aware, it was both my first tournament and my first time organizing any kind of event. It definitely would not have been successful without the help of many incredible people who lent their time, money and muscles with zero complaints.

Among them were Ryan, Cordelia, Anna, Brett, Greg, Emrys, Andres, Ryan D., Liam, Jawn, and a whole bunch of Vancouver/Seattle people who's names I haven't yet learned (but I will eventually).

Congratulations to the winners - Greg, Henry and Louis, and the second place team that made them work for it - Chris, Max and Woadie. People need to know how hard Greg worked. After throwing himself into the championship game to the extent that he went tumbling over the boards about 4 times, he moved double and possibly triple his fair share of the boards into the truck and back to the shop. He's probably still in bed recovering as I write this.

Finally, I want some pictures. Post links, instagram hashtag #teaandcrumpets, email them to shannon at rocketships ca, I'm very easy to get a hold of. Send me what you got. I also want the tshirt that Seattle promised me. I'm serious, I will come looking for you bastards if I don't get it. And thank you to the anonymous stranger who left a growler in my car. Much appreciated. Unless it was unintentional, in which case, sorry bro for stealing your beer.

And it wasn't really that cold.

Peace, love, polo,
Shannon Graham
