If you've never been to Burlington, we've got one of the most awesome polo court locations, right downtown in the big waterfront park, right on the main bike path. We've been in a long drawn out process with Parks & Rec and were supposed to lose our court 3 years ago. Things are still tied up in red tape, and we're still here, but who knows about next year. Don't miss your chance to experience what many have called "the biggest little tournament on the East Coast"

People seemed to have such an awesome time last year, we ended up with 18 teams from all over the place. We are really stoked to host this again and spread the VT mellow polo vibe.

Yeah, pretty much the same plan, only better. Lots of epic camping spots, the Car-B-Que, group dinner at Maglianero, swimming and all around awesomeness...

'Cept colder/possibly foliage/students/chilly swimming. Hopefully I'll be able to take care of the root jumps on the court.

But the root jumps are part of the court! Character building local flavor and whatnot...

Holy crap I just realized the tournament is going to be the same weekend as the Art Hop...
there is going to be so much extra stuff happening in town that weekend that this year will be even more awesome than before.

Maybe we should remix the 'paintball polo' performance art project from last year?

team time! who's in!

Yeah, we're about a month out, time to start sorting out teams...

Feel free to post up in here, or email me details.

Ok folks, some quick updates... Sponsors on board:

Black Star Bags - Messenger bag for MVP plus additional goodies for the winning team
Maglianero - Coffee & hosting the "Last Supper"
Bailey Works - some more awesome bags
The Ski Rack - Our local LBS, who have so far sorted out prizes from Bern, Smith, Arcade & more
(big thanks to Ryan, one of our players, who works there)
Fyxation - tires!
FOX - Motocross gloves (which work awesome for polo)
Giro - helmets
DVS/CADENCE - shoes

More in the works, that is just what I have so far.

As just noted, getting teams sorted soon would be a good idea. Stoked to host everybody back in VT again!

myself, cris gt, and ultramantis black aka huge dude aka brian from delaware are playing together

clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

liam will you be capping registration?

Last year I planned for 16 teams and ended up with 18. Saturday ended up running pretty late, but it worked out.

I'd like to keep it to 16 this year if we can. One court, mellow schedule, keep it fun with lots of polo and less waiting... but one or two more teams won't totally hose the plan if there is demand.

The Means (Alexis, Nick, Chris) would like to reserve a spot.

I'll probably end up going to 18 teams (like last year).

anyone need a teammate? Trying to go to this..

Ok, I think we're pretty close to full. Still some "TBDs" on the team list, which I've moved up to the top with the tourney info so I can keep editing it there instead of posting in the thread...

We've got some locals looking to be a 3rd (myself included), and a few teams looking for a 3rd. Happy to play matchmaker if people want to connect.

Please take a look above and make sure I have not messed anything up.

Oh, on a side note, Rubino from our LBS "the ski rack" got a sweet Thule rack for the winning team...

And of course, with the local connection, Mr. Raddison is bringing the heat with some RadCaps. Bizonkers.

If it's still possible I'd like to get a team in... myself, nathan and vincent from btv.

Lone wolf lookin' for a pack to crash. who needs a third?

Eryn is now Kiki and I's third:)

still want to go...don't think my team managed to register in time...if anyone needs a third or has a team mate drop....let me know!

FYI, if you have a confirmed team that is listed above, and still have players TBD, please let me know soon if you're all set with a 3rd. I've got a list of potential 3rds, as well as a short list of waiting teams. Trying to fit everybody in... Thanks!

Ok, we're at 20 teams, and I'm done adding people.

Question... long ass day with 5 rounds of swiss or slightly shorter day with only 4 rounds?

Either way, I'm going to start a bit earlier on Saturday so we can fit everybody in.

8 team double elim on Sunday will get everybody done at a reasonable time for driving home.

Side note... If you can please shoot me full player names & cities, it will help me get everything loaded into Podium in advance, which will help a lot with registration on the weekend. hit up bikepolo@mac.com

8 team bracket after Swiss rounds makes no sense. Start double elim Sat or start early and go till its done Sunday.

You knows it

The posted schedule/format worked fine the past 2 years with no complaints...

Use the swiss rounds on saturday to rank the teams, put the top 8 into double elim on Sunday.

Everybody gets 4 games on Saturday, top 8 teams get more games on Sunday. Everybody else gets some quality time to do some Vermonting.

I don't think starting double elim on Saturday makes any sense. Some teams would come to the tourney and be out after 2 games? No thanks...

You don't get a real ranking after Swiss rounds, it's the best that can be done--discussed ad nauseum.

I mean play four games and do first round of double elim on Saturday, since time became an issue. Schedule first three games at set times for Sunday with threat of forfeiture. Then everyone gets two days of polo, which this is about, not tourism.

You knows it

I'm not going to debate schedules/formats here... leave that for another thread. I've done the math, there isn't enough time Saturday to do 4 rounds of swiss with 20 teams on one court and then do the first round of double elim.

I'm sorry for airing my frustrations publicly, Liam. I suppose I am disappointed that the club was not more involved. I have nothing more to comment.

You knows it

No worries Colin. I know our schedules never match up. I talked to most of the Wednesday regulars since that is the only day I've been able to make work with the kid's schedule...

I was recruited today--because, fuck it,--and I only want to play if we can call our team "AIDS PARADE!" exclamation point, essential.

whats this about registration 'CLOSED' !!? it distinctly says (in TWO locations) registration at the courts. we've been planning and changing our schedual for months to make it to this tourny, the cost involved........and now we cant even be in the damn thing.....its BULLSHIT!!!!

polo to the people!

Liam included "Bangor?" on a post intended to gather information on interested teams on august 15th at 7:49am. Currently post #47 on this thread. Go take a look at it. You've obviously looked at this thread if you're aware of statements regarding registration, Your inability to respond while looking at other details is not Burlingtons fault.

Yep. Had one email from Bangor with no team info, posted it as a maybe and never heard anything until after we filled up more than the original roster of teams. I've done my best to fit everybody in, but 20 teams is the max.

Oh, and "registration at the courts" means you sign waivers, pay your entry fees, get your tee shirts & whatnot at the courts... Thought that it was pretty clear from all the posts in this thread that I was trying to lock down team info in advance.

I'm deff coming to this, if someone drops out I'd be willing to play.

I guess I should change that to a full sized metal hockey goal (since that is what we're playing with these days)

Try Robby Finn, that's on his way home from work.

Would people be totally bummed if we had to cancel the food option for the tournament? A few things have come up that are throwing a monkey wrench into the catering plans...

Is there any AM/PM thing happening for the swiss rounds or all 20 teams going to be there all day saturday?

clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

To that end - i just looked at the team list, and it seems like 1-10 and 11-20 would be a pretty equitable way to split things if BVT is interested in this idea.

clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

Hey Rob. I'll look into that option... will let people know on Friday.

Rob Biddle wrote:

It should be all vs all like last year. Splitting it up makes no sense for such a small group. Plus the whole point with one court is that we all hang out there and watch all the games and be social rather than the AM group play 4 games then disperse.

Saying that you don't prefer this idea would be more accurate than saying it makes no sense. There's only one court, and the difference is playing once per ten games vs once per five games.

Rob Biddle wrote:

indeed. but doing 4 rounds of swiss with 10 teams is far less fun than 4 rounds of swiss with 20 teams. Why split it when you dont have to. Besides its more fair on those teams who are all battling for those precious 7th and 8th spots. Just in case the split was not fair in the first place.

I'm definitely leaning towards 4 swiss rounds with all 20 teams. I know it will be a longer wait, but it will create a more accurate ranking than doing two separate rounds of 4x10...

With the potential for weather in the afternoon as well, it means everybody will have at least a few dry games/wet games if we do get some rain later. It would suck to be in the afternoon split and play all your games in the rain if all the morning games were dry.

With one group of 20, that means an average of about 2 hours between games...

Toronto also has a single court tournament coming up with 20 teams. Two years ago we split into two groups of 10. Curious to see what people think about your format, whichever you decide, after this weekend. We have lights, so we're thinking five rounds on Saturday, 11am to 9pm ish....

Yep, 20 teams on one court is tough. I think we're going to go with 4 rounds, 20 teams, not splitting into two groups... we have lights and could go later for a 5th round, but the lights aren't awesome. We'll see how it goes, I'll let you know what the feedback is.

Final brackets...

and this.

...and now the thank you post.

Big thanks to all the locals for all the help, and for anybody from out of town who stepped up to assist with timing games, scorekeeping, goal judging and generally making things happen all weekend. Colin & Robbie for hosting and extra help, Lockwood for running around sorting out power and whatnot, Simmers for his truck, Rubino & the Ski Rack for stepping up with awesome prizes (I am currently wearing a $40 pair of French designer underwear, which is a first for me, and I am sure for others as well).

Thanks to sponsors like Blotto Photto for the extra bonus prize, Thule with the awesome bike rack for the winning team and James' brother at Black Star Bags for the 'trophy' hip packs. Props to Kyle for the poster/tee design and to Chris for doing all the screening. Big ups to all the other sponsors too, I hope everybody got a coffee & a shower at Maglianero (or a heads up that next time you come you can get awesome coffee & a shower in the same cafe). Arcade, Smith, BERN, Fyxation, Rad Caps... all supporting the cause. Fixcraft supplied all the tournament balls (which was very cool of them).

Really stoked on how many people come from out of town for this tourney. 20 teams with 18 of them from out of state is pretty awesome for a 'small town' event. I guess word about our happy little polo world in the mountains by the lake has gotten out there.

If we still have the court next year (which currently looks doubtful), we'll be "Still Standing again, pt 4" but I think the new Mayor has green lighted the development that will finally see our court fall to the jackhammers & bulldozers in the spring of 2013. We've already got a new location approved at Oakledge Park, but no solid plans yet for somewhere to play before that gets built. Regardless, we'll try to figure out a way to make something happen again next summer so people can escape the city and come chill in VT for an epic weekend of polo. Hopefully it won't be too long till we can host an event at our new court.

Last, final and biggest thanks goes to you guys. Thanks for coming & for playing some great polo...

This tournament gave out socks and underwear as prizes. Bike polo has become practical. Good work to everyone. So much fun.
