SF Ball Whackers' Halloween Ball

Friday, October 30, 2009 - Sunday, November 1, 2009
Contact info:
bikemanben@gmail.com

Here we go Whackers

Team estimates have dropped to 20 teams and a couple of stragglers. Still a big turn out.

To make this an even better event, SF Bike Polo has covered all out of towner’s registration fees. You still have to register.

Crack team of crackheads---Check
Food—Check
Porta-potty—Check
Party—Check

We will be setting up at Youngblood park. There are two courts, which we will set up banked corners, backboards and boards where needed. The stadium seating makes for a great venue.

LOOSE CANNONS—If you need a team, let us know ASAP. First come, first serve. Polo Joel is Matchmaker. He has several posts.

This will be a two-day tournament with round robin sat. and a double-elimination on sun. Here is what is going on.

Friday Oct. 30
Ride option--Halloween Critical Mass is a blast of a ride @ 6pm. Couple thousand people dressed up on bikes taking over the town.
Mad pickup games and standard polo debauchery at one of the Mission locations till the lights go out ...10:30 ish
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&rlz=1C1CHMB_en-USUS298US303&resnum=0&q...
PARTY: The after party is at Exit 154. Live music and Beer.

Saturday Oct. 31 --- Round Robin and Costume Competition—@ Youngblood Park

http://maps.google.com/?q=37.738359+-122.383435+(,+San+Francisco,+CA,+94110,+us)

Please park on Mendell and not in the cul-de-sacs

9 am Breakfast Bagels and fixings

10 am TEAM Tournament registration

Round robin games, to 5 and TIMED. There will be prizes for best costume, so you can dress for the occasion. It is Halloween, so bust you your inner loon.

Lunch: BBQ
More Round Robin
Then the courts will be open for pickup till dark 6 pm. If you didn’t get enough polo, we can descend on the Mission. I want to see a team of S&M Chickens taking on an Omish Farmer, a vampire pope and a sexy nun down at Delores Park.

PARTY: Party has changed. Cell Space fuckers didn’t want to let us in at a discount and work with our fantastic beer sponsor. As of right now it will be at Exit 154. Kegs provided by Pyramid.

Sunday Nov. 1 --- Double Elimination—24 teams max

9 am Breakfast and Check-In

10 am Tournament will start on time. No show, no W. With all of the teams and Daylight Savings Time this day will need to run swiftly. The games will be to 5 and TIMED.

Hot Lunch—Back to the grill

Semi and Finals will not be timed.

All are welcome.

This is going to be a very fun Halloween weekend with some great polo action.

I would love an excuse(polo tournament) to come hang around SF for another weekend.

i think this is a great idea, the only glitch in cascadia is the messquerade, a big party in seattle that draws a lot of the seattle / east van polo people. i've never been to san francisco though. maybe you should talk to messman here, see if he's even holding it this year. you'll be able to get tonnes from california and possibly portland as well.

you've never been to san francisco? *jaw drops* wtf? are you holding out?

Good to know about the messquerade. Hopefully we can talk in Portland this weekend.

BRINGING THE RUCKUS

BRINGING THE RUCKUS

LA will be there, count on it!

sounds like fun... we rolln

"We don't need no education"

We (L.A) can bring few teams up there for sure......

"We don't need no education"

More POLO less costume parties! SF Definitely needs to take a cue from other cities that use tennis courts and build boards and goals this time around, or come up with a way to use that sweet basketball court above the tennis courts at Youngblood.

more costume parties.

TOP CENTER 4-EVA

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

i am pretty tempted to come to this...polo and costumes are my two best friends.

o rly?...hmm...let's talk polly...
edit* oh, i just realized this is during cross season...and the halloween cross race is my favorite...sigh

you could always give it up for a year!!

Bump.

Guess what we did last night? Played pickup and talked tournament. How much fun is that?

A lot.

Ruckus is working on a meeting with our new Rec & Parks head. This may even be an official tourney, which would be a very good thing for polo in this town.

Doing this the same weekend as the Messquerade is a bitch.

don't worry there will be plenty of polo and Messquerader's beware! Good luck down there guys!

oh, i will also be there a week early, soooo....epic pickup is expected.

Pickups, bridge ride, hill climbs, mad burritos, midget tossing, hell we might even have a can of beer if things get going. Seriously. You will drink beer. We are looking at multiple beer sponsors and I want to watch you try and eat buttered paper again. That was some funny shit. Can't wait brother.

TOP CENTER 4-EVA

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

Martin, I'll be on a team with you if you need some extra folks. We could try and get another English major and wear tweed coats and smoke pipes the whole game. I got a place for you as well buddy so get your ticket and let's get this thing turned up at least to eleven.
"I'm making it look mean!"

"I'm making it look mean!"

i'm thinking this sounds good. if no other english majors apply, let's just crush them 2 on 3.

Reggie Dunlop: She underlines the fuck scenes for ya? Jesus, if she underlines the fuck scenes for ya, she must worship the ground you walk on.
Ned Braden: They teach you how to underline in college.
Reggie Dunlop: Not the fuck scenes, they don't. Braden, you gotta learn to put out more, you know what I mean?

Let's teach em.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

Yes bro. You really making it down here? I'm ready but I don't know if I believe you yet. You gotta get a couple more vancouverites to come as well. Just keep yelling "YES BRO!" at them till they agree. Did I ever mention that I am the baby of my family? If it wasn't already obvious.

Found our today, garden space on the social block here in the Mission for Halloween night. I'll take a look at the space tomorrow and confirm. I'll be setting up the party sponsorship throughout the month so we have prizes.

hey portland drew, can you come to this?

i'd love to hook it up with you and have a lefty in mind for us to hack and slay with.

i'm only asking you because i know you'll win the costume contest and i just want to bask in your popularity.

If I'm trying to take the Amtrak into SF where do I get off? I need to find an affordable way to get down for this trip. 250 is the best flight I've found. (flying out of seattle is expensive since I have to pay to get there, otherwise virgin would be awesome.)

Sorry about that. For some reason I was thinking you were out of Seattle. Can we start working on this. I am sure that others would love to make the trip, especially if they knew it was so cheap. We have a month and a half to get that leg of the trip figured out, but only a couple of weeks to book the flights. Caravan possibilities. Doesn't Wheelie have a van? Is there a shuttle? Maybe Craigslist. Sherpas? We would love to get you down here.

wow, east van is going to fuck you up you bearded drunk. tell kenichi that we're perfecting a new move that has been dubbed as the double-kenichi. i've done it a couple times but before too long i can imagine someone pulling off a dreaded triple-kenichi. bam.

We have already perfected the infinichi. Its tough to beat. After a series of ups and downs and A's and B's our very own Kenichi steals the ball from you, makes a goal, then every time you try to bring it back in the ball is like magnetized to the end of his mallet and straight back through your goal like a cannon and a laser at the same time and if it touches you you automatically die. All the while we sit in our goal and drink another bottle of whiskey. So show up if you want to but beware you may not leave the same.
And the first case is on you buddy.

The LBC is most likely coming out for this. Super ready to get are asses kicked.
This will be the first time we have traveled to play polo and the second or third time we have played actual bad ass teams.

Can't wait:)

Hi~
my name is danfinger and I have no team. I have some hustle, no shot, terrible ball control and often show up completely hammered. My greatest trick is to forget who is on my team and block them, then fall down. Oh, and I whine a lot too. So, if you have similar abilities please consider me, danfinger, as your team mate.
~F

Don't sell yourself short Dan. You forgot to include that you are blind in one eye, have only two working fingers on you mallet hand and like to be duct taped to the bike so you don't loose it. Why you tape your left knee to the downtube is questionable, but whatever works.

Sweet!

Things have lined up for improved boards & corners at Youngblood. Fun starts on Friday. Halloween critical mass is gigantonormous, rolls out from Justin Herman around 6:30. I'm thinking we roll with the mass until the polo itch takes over and we head to Dolores for pickup. Lights go out there at 10p -- party space for later being arranged. Polo like hell Saturday & Sunday. Fashion show/contest before the finals.

Tourney format still being discussed. May do swiss rounds Sat & double elim Sunday. May also do a random mix up event.

I have a party lined up at Exit 154. It's an after critical mass/polo party. I'll post details as they arise. And/or we can just ride around town as a terrifying polo monster gang.

any good words on housing? i want to be as close to casey's as possible.

- emeryville amtrak -> emerygoround (free bus) -> MacArthor BART -> SF.
Trains are good. Boxed bike on Amtrak costs $15. They don't give a crap about the size either. You have to be in a staffed station though so probably Eugene or Portland.

I am the match maker. If you are a loose cannon I shall arrange you in a battery so that your effect is maximized.

Answer me some questions so that I may do my task well.

When I see a loose ball in the offensive zone:
a) KILL KILL KILL
b) where is my mate
c) how does my costume look

When I have scored my last goal of this tournament:
a) the crowd shall erupt in celebration of the event winning goal
b) i will want to score another right away
c) it will have been my first goal of this tournament

When I steal the opponent's ball:
a) there are three gasps oh shit as they watch their doom
b) I feed up a breakaway
c) I make sure the opponent does not get it back

a) goal tending is for super heroes
b) goal tending is for the tired and weak

You forgot answer "d) i fall down cause i'm too drunk" for each question

Hey! I only fell down that one time! Ok, maybe it was a couple of times. ok, maybe it was more than a couple of times. But I wasn't drunk, I was stoned! (ok, maybe it was both)

I'm 95% sure that my attendance to this weekend just got bumped to 100%

Tacos Al Pastor is coming to marinate in SF juices.
Can you guys suggest any hostels? I'm bringing 4 people with me.
Oh, and what's the address for the pickup on Friday?
818DOMIN8

[:][][:]

I hear the hostel in the Mission is good.

The gf's brother got a great deal on a hotel for Halloween weekend by going through hotwire.com.

The general area for pickup & parties is the Mission. Just north of the Mission is the area known as SOMA. Be careful, there are a lot of flophouses in SOMA (or the Tenderloin). Downtown / Financial District / Union Sq. is the shopping/business/hotel area. All of these neighborhoods are tightly packed together. Practically all SF is easily accessible by bicycle -- but these are the most central 'hoods.

Thank you to those who are self-sufficient with housing! Most people living in this town have a small apartment without a back yard, &/or roommates. Our capacity for free housing is limited. I know Ruckus is working hard on this front.

Youngblood Park is in the remote Southeastern corner of the city. Not particularly close to anything but it's flat and an easy ride (about 20 min from the Mission, 25 min in your polo gear).

Critical Mass starts at the end of Market St. in front of the Ferry Building, 6p. Look for the 1,000 cyclists in costume.

Note to self & other SF's: bring bike coalition maps on Friday.

PS: this is turning in to a large tournament. It looks like we are over 24 teams. Your patience will be appreciated.

Im stoked for this. I have not been home since June (I am from the east bay but live in PHX). Dont worry about a place for me to stay, I have family in the bay and friends in SF to crash with if housing becomes an issue for you all. My teammates will still need a place to stay.

disregard. Ride bailed no phx team will be there.

Forrest is going to kick some ass

If by kicking ass you mean getting loaded and letting cute girls and Martin shave his head two nights in a row, yes he will kick ass. I will have clippers on me. :) One week baby.

Betcha I can do it too. Let's say $200 bet? I'll need the money up front though. Let's make it $300 (those airplane beer prices are high...).

The Polo Gods are cruel.

So on monday on my way to polo, I was ghost riding my teammates new polo bike to the courts and had a little mishap. Evidently your fingers are not supposed to touch the back of your hand. I separated the middle finger at the first knuckle and it opened up like Pacman. So no polo for me.

On the bright side for you all - I get to concentrate more on the tourney. The dark side of the finger, I was going to use my chef skills to give you great food. I can't hold a knife so the food will not be quite what I had planned.

Everyone is pulling together and we look forward to seeing everyone this weekend.

Well since it is Haloween, we should just serve your BRAINS!

IF YOU ARE DRIVING TO SF ANY TIME SOON

The bridge that gets people on 80W across the Bay to SF is broken and closed. Decent chance it will still be closed this weekend.

12 hours until the first car from L.A. leaves! Sweet! So excited!

Hey Whackers

Thank all of you for coming to the SF Ball Whacker’s Halloween Ball. It is going to be a hell of a fun weekend with some great polo action. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up on what is going down.

This is SF’s second tourney. We listened to everyone’s comments from the last one and have stepped things up. Due to several factors, we are going commando again. With it being Halloween, the timing is right and there should be no problems. The organization and bike parking will be in the basket ball court to help keep a low profile. Car parking will be listed below. Please do not park in the Cul-de-sacs. A HUGE factor is Sat. night is day-light-savings. That means Sunday has to go off on time and adhere to the schedule.

Friday:

Critical Mass: Crazy costumed whackos on bikes. Starts at 6pm at Herman plaza.

http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&q=herman+plaza+sf&fb=1&gl=us&hq=herm...

Email me if this is in your plans—I would like to set up a POC so you can ride together and make it to the pick up courts.

Pick up @ Shotwell: Two courts, Trash cans. Bring your cozies. I will be there for a bit for pre-registration.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&rlz=1C1CHMB_en-USUS298US303&resnum=0&q...

Following pickup there is a show at Exit 154. Kimbo is our player POC and we will have ambassadors at pick up to guide you to the location. There will be several cases of beer brought in by Pyramid for your consumption.

Sat. Youngblood Park

http://maps.google.com/?q=37.738359+-122.383435+(,+San+Francisco,+CA,+94110,+us)

Please park on Mendell St. DO NOT PARK IN THE CUL-DE-SACS.

9 am Breakfast of Bagels and fixings. Coffee

Round Robin and Costume Competition. This should be a hell of a lot of fun. I hope to see a lot of crazy polo people. This is a team costume event. I repeat: TEAM

BBQ and pickup.

If you didn’t get enough polo action, we can descend on Delores Park in the Mission.

9ish Pyramid Polo Party

Kegs provided by Pyramid Brewing. As of this moment we are heading back to Exit 154. Costume winners will be announced. We will also gather a list of other parties going on.

Sunday

Double Elimination.

9 am breakfast and check in.

10 am Start::Daylight Saving has cut an hour so this day has to go off on time and run smoothly.

Kegs from Pyramid: BBQ: Bring a water bottle and one for a friend.

Thanks again for coming and we hope everyone has a great time.

BRINGING THE RUCKUS

BRINGING THE RUCKUS

The bridge is down Friday evening! That means fewer cars in SF!!

Now, I know what Ruckus means by 'commando' but not sure everyone does. It does not mean games will be played without underwear. (Although, by all means feel free to be free. We don't want to know.) It does mean that this non-event is not being run at the standards of a proper official Polo Tournament. There will be no waivers to sign. We are still preparing for good times and as much polo as we can possibly squeeze into the daylight hours.

Clear blue pretty warm(ish) skies here in SF. Wish you were too.

Follow polojoel on twitter. I intend to post some there, we will see.

OK, running and playing in a 20-team swiss round don't leave much room for announcing into the tubes.

Fabu day here in SF. Overcast in the morn, warm & sunny in the day. Our start a bit late. Usual rules grumbling mumbling. Excellent breakfast and coffee. BEST BURGER EVER was overheard several times (the broken Ruckus having ample opportunity to showcase significant non-polo skills). Much Pyramid was consumed and a huge round of applause for that. Four rounds wrapped up around 5:15p and pickup until sundown. Much concern about our daylight time tomorrow, important for us to get running early.

The only team to beat Cascadia was Cascadia. The Superfriends (flying, spidering, and bat manating in from Seattle) put in a spectacular appearance, in four games you could probably count goals against them in one hand. White Rabbit White Rabbit White Rabbit (East Van) won the hardest fought battle against Rogue Squadron (Portland). Some tough fought battles amongst the Californians, more mixed records LA SF OAK. Long Beach, Santa Cruz, Sacramento also well represented.

Parties tonight. Do it again tomorrow.

Results

Winner: White Rabbit White Rabbit White Rabbit (East Van)
(Two games to beer point against...)
2nd: Superfriends (Seattle)
3rd: Los Valleros (LA)
4th: Rogue Squadron (Portland)
5th: Psyphon's Murder Law (SF)
6th: TBR (SF)

MVP: Julian. And by MVP I mean we watched Batman score goals for Seattle like hell all day, and move the ball around a bicycle in ways not seen in these parts before.

Hell yeah Puffin as MVP, {B.O.G - Knight Owls Caw}
Congrats East Van,

Killer weekend! Killer games! Thank you SF!

*Ride, bake, polo, repeat.

Ride, bake, polo, repeat.

SF you are simply the best. you had the best polo breakfast I've seen courtside all year, the best polo weather of any tournament i've been to all year, have one of the best cities to visit, and treated all your guests like rock stars.

the tournament ran smoothly and the games were great to watch in the youngblood stands. the boards were awesome, the beer was cold, the burgers were life-saving-- all of the players loved it and we'll come back just as soon as we can.

thanks for everything SF, you really outdid yourselves. east van will be so jealous of my tan.

SF Hallowe'en Ball Whackers' Ball 2010!!

Hi all ! Yes the tournament was super fun and SF knows how to get it done for sure. Thank you very much guys for everything.

BUT! One of my team mates was diagnosed with H1N1 when we got home. We thought he had just got a cold as we people from the southern California area are not used to cold weather.
I wanted to send this out to everyone and if you feel sick go to a doctor right away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im going to start a whole other thread also to try and inform as many people that I can.

Sorry about this and I hope to slap the ball around with everyone soon.

Josh LBC

This weekend was Polo Heaven.
Joel thanks for being such a wonderful host and I'm very sorry I was unable to help with those wheel covers. I never did find my expensive markers which really bummed me out. Over all this was the best tournament I have ever been to. Everyone was friendly and amazing. I hope to see you all very soon.

Hope your friend gets better LBC. That sucks to hear about his illness and thanks for coming up to SF.

EAST VAN- Congrats on a beautiful victory. You guys really put on a show.

Thank you everyone:D

"Joel thanks for being such a wonderful host"

Thanks should go to Ben Ruckus, he was the man. Many of us helped in different ways. Regardless, you're all welcome. It was great having you.

congrats to east van and 818! and all the teams!some of the best games of polo long beach has ever played. thanks to all who helped to put this tourney together. i got some pretty good footage when i wasnt playing or practiceing and im out with the swine for awhile so i'll def have that footy up soon and post the link. great memmories, great learnning expierence, and hopefully long beach can represent a little better better next year! :) thanks again and hope to see everyone on the court again soon! happy polo!

I just have to say, Fuck Yeah. That was a great polo weekend. The goal was to make sure that everyone had a great time. The weather was perfect. The courts were tight. The beer flowed. Huge thanks to Pyramid Brewery for their sponsorship. And the games were amazing. Sorry it has taken so long to get this posted. Typing is tough with the busted hand and spent the entire day still tying up loose ends.

The Weekend started for most with the Halloween Critical Mass and then a festive pickup session. It was great to see so many people out in costume. Cycling Santa was my favorite.

Day one we ran a swiss. Worked out great. Much more chill mix than round robin. The costume competition was great. Nothing like seeing gouls, princesses and superfriends swinging polo mallets.

The winners of the costume competition (custom Ball Whacker’s Ball wheel covers) was an easy decision. Team Superfriends were a lock as the Superfriends, Superman, Spiderman and Batman. Yes, their super suits were cool front runners with the PDX Star Wars contingent, but the fact that they switched to their hero’s alter egos between each game was fucking brilliant. Congrats guys. Class. Pure class.

Day Two

Damn that was some great polo. 6 of the last 8 games were at beer point. Everyone was on edge and yelling. My voice is shot. LA came up with some new-found speed. The home teams represented well and were taken out on a couple of nail-bighting beer point games. I’m glad at least my bike got to play. Portland-solid as always. Seattle came to play and ran into a couple of roadblocks, LA and White Rabbit. They fought their way to the finals and force the second game, but E. Van was dominant all day long.

1st: White Rabbit White Rabbit White Rabbit (East Van)
(Two games to beer point against...)
2nd: Superfriends (Seattle)
3rd: Los Valleros (LA)
4th: Rogue Squadron (Portland)
5th: Psyphon's Murder Law (SF)
6th: TBR (SF)

MVP --- Julian (Seattle) had it all this weekend. The shots, the passes and moves. Nice job you deserve it. Puffin Rules (chirp, chirp BOG)

Much love to all that made it to the tourney. Sacramento, Oakland, Long Beach, Santa Cruz. It was great having you guys out and hope you had a blast.
A huge thanks to all of our sponsors. Pyramid Brewery came through huge and made sure that all had a good time on the court and off. Freight Bags, thank you for sewing deep in the night to finish the prizes. Thank you Ritual Coffee for getting us going in the morning and coming through every day. Freewheel gets a special thanks. Thanks Christian and the Bike Farm for contributing the DFL bike. Heavy Metal Bike Shop, Refried Cycles, Brooks/Knog, Plemon Toe Straps, thank you all.

I have send out huge love to my SF crew and Aaron (The Coyote). Everyone pitched in and made it happen. Miah you are my MVP. Laird, Dan, Devin, Robin, Andrew did a great job on construction and install. Thank you Joel for everything and Cic for making sure everything ran smoothly. Thank you John and Dustin for transporting. Kim and David for the space. Thanks for coming through Casey. Steve you crazy sod. You are The Machine. Thanks to all that housed our guests. Thanks Otto for not biting people. Thanks to all that helped with the food and the clean up. I am sure that I have missed some people. Thank you all.

My goal was to make sure everyone had a great time and set a precedent for hosting. We want people to think of this as a Destination Tournament every year. Talk to those who were there and mark it on your calendar.

Just to be sure everyone got this part!

If im not living there next year I will be sure to make it to the tourney. im so pissed i didnt get out this time around.

On a more personal note, I learned a ton on this adventure.

I wanted to thank Leon, Seabass, Julian and Peiter for sitting down and talking polo. There is so much more to this than the game. Thanks for making the trip, you too Alex, Rory and Jen. I hope you are healing well Jen.

Jerry, Brian and Ken. What the hell guys, I don't think we even got to toast together let alone party. Next tourney I'll have time and some whiskey. Thank you for coming.

Thank you LA for coming in force. Your presence was greatly appreciated. Alex, Too Short and David, always great to see you and wish I could have played. Eli, thank you for the help with the wheel covers. Thank you NoLove and your team for serving up that lesson to Forrest and Arron. That was really fun to watch.

Great to see you Forrest. Glad to hear life is going well in Seattle. You know you are always welcome on the home court.

Arron my brother. I dub thee The Coyote ahh ooooooo. You are a true polo ambassador. Thank you for all your hard work and the good times. You are always welcome at my house (even if I don't have one).

As for the home team, it was amazing seeing everyone really gel and make everything go smooth. After fucking my fingers up I was left pretty bummed and in a bit of a panic. Doug, Steve and Jeremiah you were all life savers with the housing and pitching in where you could. Almost everyone on the SF roster helped in some way. I am proud to call you my friends.

My fingers are killing me so enough of the sentimental bull shit.

Much love to all.

Many thanks and praises go to San Fran crew and all the teams who put on a great show of skill and sportsmanship. Team Santa Cruz learned a lot from yous peoples. I thought we were going to win, but I didnt realize people had been practicing so much. AH WELL. We would still like to extend a welcome to any team that wants to play here in sunny santa cruz to come on over . We would love to have visitors and can play any day. We are also talking about a tournament on May 15th of 2010. Lets just say we already have 30+ gallons of home brewed cider in the works with more on it's way. We'll probably be coming to see some of you soon... Oakland, San Fran, Sacramento. We want more. Hit me up if you want to come visit. thebackyardfarmer@yahoo.com

Love,

Hey Jon and the rest of the Santa Cruzers,
We Hang out at Dolores Park on Monday, Thursday, and most of the time Saturday beating that poor little orange ball up. You should come and join us more often. We also jump the bay and hit around in Oaklandia once a month. Much fun. Give me a holler before you come up and we'll make sure you get some action. We will also be heading your way soon hopefully. Thanks for coming to our tourney.
Kimbo

Congrats to Vancouver and Seattle. Great games everyone. SF really has their stuff together. The tourney ran real smooth, and we were well taken care of. Great games against some great teams, and the pickup in Dolores park was memorable too. From the burgers to the free Pyramid beer, this was a great trip. Love that Youngblood park, and the new boards are swell, LA will be there every time from now on. Ben and Joel, job well done. Steve thanks for making almost our entire club and their hangers on a delicious breakfast, and letting us crash at your casa. Cheers!

I'm not much of a photographer so I have to get things out the old fashioned way.

Ben, Dan, Miah, Devon, Aaron, Laird (and fuck me if I forgot you) had to deal with Type-A Full Moon Polojoel in an undisclosed school bus graveyard. High above was a brightly lit billboard on a hillside. We had scrap lumber in piles but had to move it because another bus was possibly coming in for docking. The open yard was covered in mulch, a lost screw was lost. Drills whirled, people started making things happen.

Saturday as we are getting started, Clark Kent (aka Leon) suddenly appears with a bouquet of mallets on his back. He has a very big smile on his face. At the time, I wondered who this mild mannered man really was... The mallet bouquet was a very nice effect, it is likely to be replicated on a runway in Paris soon.

Ben Ruckus, with wrapped hand, standing in front of a grill on Saturday. The burgers upon that grill were large and juicy and sizzling. The spread was simple and delectable. Less than 15 yards away, below and behind a wall & some trees was the best set of polo games northern California has yet produced, and he made it happen. A line waited by the grill.

The Superfriends. They had the costumes of legends.

Sunday morning we are affixing a couple white boards on the fence above the stands. Below us are two empty sun-drenched tennis polo courts. Daylight savings fell back that morning; warm clear weather burned the clouds away very quickly. It's early and warm and people are moving about getting ready for the day.

My girlfriend Cecilia, right foot in a bright pink half cast, helped me draw out the brackets and listened to me explain it once. From that spot she ran the tournament, waving marker above the stands. As she found people she would call out "do you have polo friends? do they have bicycles? why don't you find them and play some polo? go, hurry." Pieter would have that gap between games go < 5 min but this is SF and people can sometimes get in a daze.

I have this blur of a memory that I will forget soon. It is Los Valleros beating us to a quick pulp. 5 - bang. David and Joker did not let us past half court. Hunger, we felt their hunger too late.

Oh, Sunday afternoon of a double elimination tournament! The fat sugary bacon of bike polo. There are teams on the court who came in from around the region to duke it out for a spot. They know to win a game means they can play one more. They are working working to win one more game. Each time, one goes away, off to drink some beer in the stands.

LA beats Seattle in the 4th round winners bracket and the crowd goes wild.

I'm looking at my watch and feeling some warm sun and I am torn between wanting to push and wanting to revel in the increasing level of play. After LA my team (TBR) takes out Ghost Riders (SF) and plays Portland to beer point. The better (this event) SF team is playing Seattle. East Van is playing Portland. We are supposed to be running these games at the same time but how? Everyone wants to watch.

White Rabbit White Rabbit White Rabbit is playing Psyphon's Murder Law (SF). C Murder is playing an aggressive game. It's working, SF played them down to the beer. At one point there was a collision and pile of Pieter and C-Murder bikes on the court, standing next to it is Pieter holding Casey by the shoulders and having a conversation with him. We cannot hear this conversation from the stands. It looks like a very animated and serious conversation. The gentlemen untangle their bikes and rejoin the game in progress. East Van gets the cherry goal.

Seattle works magic through the bottom bracket. SF gives them a good game. Portland gives them a good game. LA gives them a good game. Onward they march, digesting the meat left behind by East Van. As they prepare to face the monster we have pickup fly on both courts. People want some of that sugary polo bacon. 4:00p approaches, the sun is behind the hill now sunglasses off. Sun sets 5:15p, time to start. A crowd lines the net, Doug refs.

First game to 4-4. Seabass is like a shark in the water: fast and unshakable. Leon uses his magnetic superpower to control the ball. Julian flies from edge to edge making the ball follow him. East Van is a force with Pieter and Rory with Alex in goal how can you even presume to get through that? Seattle does.

I can picture Rory's hand in the second game. He had a Spill in the first, four (five?) bloody knuckles. His right hand glove going from gray to black as the game proceeds. Alex is not in goal. He has the ball and is moving it up and shooting it. There it is again. Alex not in goal, moving it up and shooting. East Van wins.

The Sun is gone and we are celebrating in twilight. Prizes materialize. A small bit of very happy fanfare and we are done.

And gone. Bags boxes trucks drills hands hands hands. As I say good-bye to Ben in the dark, the park seems effectively stripped of traces of anything at all happened here.

Those are my pictures.

Quote:

sugary polo bacon

hahahaha i think we ate that on the way to the corvallis-game-that-wasn't once. also, thanks for a great time!

Best recap ever! Thanks man.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Alex is East Van's most dangerous weapon. Slim, quiet, never know when he's going to strike - and left-handed to boot! Yeah MVP! Definitely sorry I missed the match up between you and SeaBass!

think i enjoyed the little stories more than a picture.

LOST AND FOUND

Along with the typical collection of mallets we have a couple of things.

Shell and stick necklace
couple of pairs of gloves

MISSING: don't get a curse on your polo mojo

a belated thank you to everyone in sf, your all awesome! thank you joel and cec for having us stay in your home for the weekend, couldnt have asked for better accommidation!

The silent killer is not in goal. He has created another breakaway (on Seattle, in the final final game) and is about to shoot.

Thank you for that!

Better late thanks than no thanks. Thank you San Francisco for excellent pickup at DP and across the bridge in Oaktown (Awesome to meet all the O-town players as well). Thanks for showing me around, getting me drunk and being great polo people all around.

Can't tell you how disappointed I was to get back to forty seven degrees and rain after two weeks of sixty and sunny.

Golden Gate Park for the NAs in 2011! Ben you're my hero for powering through that hand shit (Learn how to ghost a bike!)

Kimbo, pull that trigger, Shooter! (By the way, I made one of those mallets with no caps, DAMN, no more two inch mallets for me)

Peace, love and polo

yeah so cleaning out a hard drive and found this very choice group shot of the first SF BWB.
