Polo Retreat II

Friday, April 6, 2012 - Monday, April 9, 2012
Host club:
East Van Bike Polo
Contact info:

Court size:
1 hockey box (with lights) 2 tennis courts

Polo Retreat is back, and this year we are going bigger and better than the last. We've got a brand new island to visit, with better courts, lights, and camping.

When: April 6-9th 2012
Where: Gabriola Island/ Huxley Park / Descanso Bay Campground

It's even easier to get to this year! You can make reservations from Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver to Departure Bay in Nanaimo (https://www.bcferries.com/bcftravelcentre) and then take one of the 16 sailings that depart from Departure Bay to Gabriola Island every day (http://www.bcferries.com/schedules/southern/nhgi-current.html).

This year, we'll be camping at Descanso Bay Regional Park, which hosts a beautiful private campground that is open all year round (which means facilities and campfires, yay!) http://www.rdn.bc.ca/cms.asp?wpID=1247 Each campsite can host 4 adults (this will be enforced) so start thinking about three friends that will be willing to put up with your drunk and high ass all weekend.

And we'll be playing at Huxley Park, in the town of Gabriola. Huxley Park hosts one small-ish hockey box (with lights!!!) and two tennis courts that we'll have access to for most of the weekend. And although the park is surrounded by trees, it's also walking distance from a grocery store, a coffee shop, and a liqour store. Google Map here:
http://g.co/maps/28uyk

Nobody reads all of this anyway, so I'm going to post the rest of the details below. Any questions, contact me at: stormfin@gmail.com

If you were there last year, nothing will keep you away. If you weren't and you don't come this year, you hate bike polo. Why do you hate bike polo?

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

I love bike polo from the bottom of my heart.

Time and money. One is a dirty mean bitch and the other is always running away.

Hater.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

come early and pre-party/play/tonds-la-pelouse in nanaimo

I'm coming and I'm bringing my dogs.

<--- Look at that face. LOOK AT IT. He's coming.

Awesome island, everything is within a couple of kilometres. Twin Beaches, just to the north, is a nice day use area with a small commercial plaza c/w pizza joint / deli and cold beer and wine store. Our family usually gets a couple of caming weekends a season here. The campground is also a great spot to watch the sun set. This is a 'locals' secret spot.
Will be there this year fo sure!

yeah fred, i'm gonna sit this one out.
-expensive
-no team action
-the possibility of ill reception by island authorities
-polo family at their worst behavior
-stuck on fucking island
-clashing with local hockey folks
-tennis courts/no boards..?
-monsters/haters
-chief's "shit list" + 1 woadie..
here's a cheaper more logical option. play at grandview saturday and sunday and just drive out of town and all camp together saturday night...

Last year we played plenty of team games.

In case anyone missed it on the facebook event page, here are the details for booking campsites:

Campsites will have to be booked in advance for the retreat. The contact for the campground is Jim Demler, and the phone # is 250-247-8255. I've already spoken with Jim so when you call to book, just say that you are coming for the Bike Polo weekend and he will try to arrange us all in the same area. I think there is a map on the Descanso Bay Park website if you'd like to request a specific campsite. Remember it's 4 people / campsite. If neither you or your three friends have a credit card for campground reservations, I am willing to reserve campsites on your behalf, as long as I receive payment one way or another within a week of booking it for you.

Let me know if there are more questions!

I called to book a campsite earlier this week and left a message. Are they terrible at returning calls? I'll try again...

island time mon......prolly out back sparking one up. If you really want to see an example of this, I invite you to go visit lasqueti...

So they called back and they aren't taking payment in advance, but call to reserve a spot. Camping is $10 per night, cash only.

Aw man so stoked to see you guys are doing this. I thought my crew came up with this idea, glad to see its happening. We have been thinking of doing this somewhere in southern oregon out in the middle of nowhere.

As both a poloer, and a former regular participant in the institution of Gabriola afternoon road hockey (as consistent as the tides), just giving organizers the heads up that from 2-6/7 on Sunday their will be a hockey game on the courts.

Knife fights are a very real possibility if Gabriolans don't get their Sunday hockey.

Good brakes only slow you down.

Brad doesnt joke around.

also, come home. revelstoke sucks. cuz it took you away from me.

Brad,

No worries, we are coordinating with the Gabriola Recreation society to work out a schedule that will accommodate everyone. Between the tennis courts and hockey box there should be plenty polo and hockey to go around!

Polo and Gabriola road hockey? Not even in my dreams.

Comin home for this one, but Revy most definitely does not suck. Finding a polo court this time of year is proving a bit of a challenge though. Sick pow lines will just have to keep me settled.

To entice you a bit more....

Incredible narration!

hoping for some olympia representation this year.

fyi...for those planning on taking the ferry to gabriola (its a long swim), it leaves from nanaimo harbour, right in downtown nanaimo, not from departure bay. its about a 10-15 minute bike ride south from the departure bay terminal.

Who is riding/swimming to this one? I would like some company/guides.....Prolly going to this and not pdx3

Probs riding. Get at me.

Okay catfish, I'm going to move my mouth like this...

Tight, training ride!

Portland United

I'll be driving and am offering to cart people's things for them. Not sure how much stuff I can cram into the civic hatchback though!

I too may be able to cart some stuff... and have quite a bit more room in my ride than lisa... but that all depends on how many people I'm taking. Let me know and I'll let you know - msg me directly!

Hey Folks, just a couple short weeks to Polo Retreat II!!! I've had a couple questions about ferries, so I thought I would clarify. To get to Gabriola Island, you can ferry from EITHER Tsawwassen ferry terminal or Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, to Departure Bay in Nanaimo. From Departure Bay, you have a short drive from Departure Bay to Nanaimo Harbour - You catch the ferry to Gabriola Island there.

http://g.co/maps/x7g3y

That ferry to Gabriola runs roughly once every one hour and 15 min, so reservations are not required.

Lastly, Please, if you haven't called the campground to reserve a site, please do! They are pretty relaxed up there, but I'd like them to be prepared for us!

If anyone out there wants to share finances on a ride to the island, I am driving as I am dropping my kid off with friends on Vancouver Island for the weekend. Hit me up if you want a lift.

Dear Polo Retreat-ers,

We're getting very close now! I'm looking forward to seeing/hanging out/playing polo with ya'll very soon.

I need to give you all a heads-up regarding some changes that I've had to make to the schedule. Unfortunately, due to a communication breakdown, the tennis players who's courts we were going to use got their panties all in a bunch and are now refusing to let us on their courts. Sadly this isn't a simple "we got here first" matter- they even went so far as to threaten my contact on Gabriola with a lawsuit. So please be respectful and stay off the tennis courts while we are there.

Seeing as how this has only left us with one court (the small hockey box) and no time to move Polo Retreat (this all went down this week) here is the solution i'm proposing:

Friday, as people arrive, we play on the hockey box. I figure at most they'll be 20-30 of us, so there should be enough polo to go around. Ditto for Sunday as people leave. We'll still be using parks space, so you all know the rules, no drinking, no smoking, etc.

Saturday, hop on your bikes and bring $7, because we are all going to do the 20 min trip over to Nanaimo to play on two nice built, lit courts, with open fields of grass to lay on, AND COMPLETE FREEDOM. Nobody to hassle us about smoking or drinking or anything else you might do. Nothing but complete and total polo freedom for as long as you want Saturday. There's a liqour store and food near by. Then we'll all head back to Gabriola (it's $7 round trip with bikes) to dance it up to the Pernell Reichert band (ft. Tom Tischer) at the Skol pub. And, just in case you were wondering, it's my understanding that the hockey box is a no-go for us saturday anyway.

I know it's not ideal, but I think it's going to work out quite well. For those of you who haven't been to nanaimo, they've done a really good job with their courts. They really are secluded and surrounded but sunny grass (sun not guaranteed) and the trip over is short and cheap.

Anyway, thanks everybody for understanding!

Shannon

ya, sounds like the best possible solution.. See you guys up there on friday!

nanaimo is pretty much a polo retreat all year round anyway =)

if anyone wants to crash at the polo house here at any point, we just got an influx of new couch space.

good work on fixing a tricky situation Shannon. anyone got space for a medium sized Brit in their tent, I didn't have space to bring one from the UK with my 23kg weight allowance!

Woody, did you find a tent?

____________
The only reason anyone does anything.
For the lulz.

Got one sorted cheers man!

Got one sorted cheers man!

i want this to happen in my life in 2013. shannon, how far in advance do ya'll plan for the next one?? soon as youu/ya'll have dates in consideration, let me know will ya?
xo

So one space is $10 per night, and can fit 4 people, but does that mean only one tent, or can you fit more than one tent into one space?

hitting the road early Friday. Looking forward to a great weekend!
