We will most likely leave my house and head downtown to see some of the brilliant nightlife. You can register on Friday.

Also on Saturday---Gem City Massacre

Gem City Massacre registration is @ 7 and the race will being @ 8.‎

The entry fee is $5. It will be awesome.

Sunday will be the one and only 6th Midwest Bike Polo Champeenships. If you need to register please arrive around 10am so we can get it done. We will have two courts that will blow you away. They will require you to change your game. The fee is $10 a player or $30 per team. With your registration you will get an incredible t-shirt and a rad spoke card. Game time will begin @11am.

so far we are getting great companies to support this event will list when finalized

can barely contain my excitement!

so how do we register? Just show the day of the tourney or do i contact somebody. Will there be any housing or are we left to fend for ourselves.

Registration will be on that Sat. the 23rd, if you know you are coming let us know so we will expect you. As for housing we should have you covered, the quicker people let us know how many spots we need covered it will be handled. Either way, if you from out of town and need a place just let people know and someone will give you a spot.

i'll have a team coming down from milwaukee for sure but we might have a fourth with us. So the team is going to be Thanh Nguyen, Dan Fischer, and Sean weber. we dont have a name yet we'll make one up soon. if you need any more info Email me; Morrowtvn@sbcglobal.net.

That would've been an awesome reunion but we're going to do it all-Chicago. Plus, I figured given the local that it would be all-Dayton for you on this one - DD&D. Anyway, it's going to be nice to have you back for a Midwest.

chicagobikepolo.com

Double D, we have a strong force coming in from Cincinnati and by now we know Dayton well enough not to get lost.

doug any other nyc kids coming. maybe i can get on a team with one of them if you can talk them into it. or maybe ken and quinn if they make it from their bike trip.

When are you coming to Dayton? Will you be here on Friday????

you should hook your self out to some polo teams in the south for some extra cash. i bet you could get some P-cola kids to give you at least a large to get them on the podium. speaking of podium lucky seems pretty desperate to get some validity to his comments and might just pay you to say you agree with him too. it would be perfect, the polo whore and the polo bore.

to whom should i contact in regards to housing?

-hero squad * milwaukee, wi-

- Beaver Boys * Milwaukee Bike Polo Club -

We will have a giant post this weekend that should shore up tourney info including housing.
Lee

OK. Not a "giant" post at all.
Housing - we decided not to put a particular person in charge of housing. Suffice it to say that we have plenty of housing. Everyone expecting to stay should bring their own sleeping bag and towel. No dogs please. If you have animal allergies please let us know when you show up so we can take that into account. I have a lot of camping space in my back yard if you so choose. The 10-day forcast looks pretty good...for now.
Courts - we have two of them for play. One is bigger than any tournament court i've played on (not sure how much bigger, but I suspect it is approx. 150' by 75'). the other court is a good size at 108' by 54'. The two courts are definately different in size and your play will vary depending on which court you play on. All "big" games will be held on our main HUGE court.
Area - the polo courts are located in a very cool park. Lots of trees, playground, a small water area (this is awesome and I hope it will be running for the weekend), and functioning public bathrooms. Dayton is not very big so the courts shouldn't be more than a mile or two from where any of you stay.
Gem City Massacre - Dayton's once yearly alleycat will be on Saturday evening. This has been a beast of a race in years past. Party after.
If you can, come friday to register and party on friday night. Saturday informal play all day so that as many different teams get to play each other as possible, and to get a feel for the brackets. Satuday evening race (or not) and party saturday night. Wake sunday morning and play hard for tournament. Dont' be an asshole. leave sunday or stay to leave on monday.

With all this said, how many teams can we expect??
Lee

hey lee columbus will have anywhere from 2(def. locked)- to 4 possible teams. that going on as well where you put me and fro joe.

Look out for "Team Johnny Midwest"!!!

chicago = joe lefty, ben schicago, matt

fucking great tourny. never felt better about throwing a game than that last game to milwaukee. you just feel so bad for them after 6 tournys and no wins. Joe, brian, Kremin, and Jake ( sorta) consider it my gift to you

This was pretty great. Couldn't have been much better as far as I was concerned. Nice work everyone, it was great to meet some new faces and play lots and lots of polo. Working on some photos right now.

So much I could say. So many people I could thank. But I'm pretty worn out, so here's what I've got right now:

Whenever I am sad or angry in the future, I am going to try to remember the look on Goldie's face when he scored a 3/4 court shot to tie an elimination game astride a brakeless freewheel downhill bike. Pure joy.

good point to bring up. brakes should be required for all polo. that guy was good, but not perfect and he hit people at times when he didnt mean to.

this tournament was way better then i ever expected. we decided on the way home from boston when we were in Ohio that the state sucked and we weren't going. we could'nt have been more wrong. Madison picked us up in a huge van and dragged our asses to Dayton. i couldn't believe how many people were there and how many of them were players. 27 teams in total? in years past we would be happy with 15 teams for the midwest. great job with food and drinks at the court. both courts were awesome and in such a cool location being on top of the city. dayton you really pulled through on this. so many knew faces i didn't know that many people played polo here, come out to cog for the open bracket and show the rest of the country what we have to offer! special thanks to Elton i wouldn't have made it in the van with out your gift.

Add bike polo to the list of things that Wisconsinites are good at in addition to beer and cheese. What a great weekend and thanks to Elton, the Lees, Ben at Merchfits, E.P. and everyone else who pitched in. Hopefully next time we meet, I'll be on the court bumpin' shoulders with y'all.

Here is a quick recap of the tourney. In the winners bracket Madison, Chicago, Milwaukee and Dayton (Gordie, Doug and i can't remember the third) were the semi-finalists. Madison beat Chicago 5-3 (I think) and Milwaukee beat dayton 5-2. Then Milwaukee beat madison in the finals 5-3. In the losers bracket Lexington knocked off dayton 4-3 in one of the best games of the day and chicago beat the other lexington team. Then Chicago beat lexington in a very good game after which madison knocked off chicago 5-2 to win the loosers bracket. Milwaukee then beat madison 5-4 to win the tournament. Sorry if i messed anything up.

All correct except the first Mad/Chicago game. That was 3-2, to Mad. I wouldn't say anything except to reinforce in my mind that we got THIS CLOSE.

chicagobikepolo.com

Dayton, this was one of my most anticipated tournaments of the year and you didn't disappoint. Phenomenal. And what a crew. Loved our first meeting a couple years ago and this only reinforced my impression that Dayton must be the Midwest's best kept secret. Talented, friendly folks, engaging city, and a court that can't be beat for play and location. Spread the word.

One specific mention: Lexington - what a game! You guys are killing it down there. Bring that shit (and that car) to Ottawa!

And, of course, thanks to everyone for collectively making it a great weekend.

Thanks again for the great weekend Dayton.

hey dayton, thanks for the awesome tournament, it was one of the best midwests yet and definitely the biggest. just to clarify about what kremin said earlier, when driving across the featureless landscape that is Northern Ohio for what seems like an eternity on our way to Boston (already a 16-17 drive one way) we said "fuck driving all the way to dayton for just a one day event" (15-16 hrs in a car for about 1 hour of actual playing time) but luckily ben from madison said they'd pick us up in a huge van and got us really excited about going. i don't know how we're gonna keep this event to one day at the rate that it's growing...
anyways, so glad we came, it was an awesome tourney, i kept meeting very friendly people all day, great weather, and awesome court. hope to see some of you guys at the COG in MKE on June 6-7th (two weeks!!)
-hero squad * milwaukee, wi-

- Beaver Boys * Milwaukee Bike Polo Club -

Thanks again for the good times, Dayton. Wish we could've brought a couple more teams, but we have a lot of folks out with injuries right now, for some reason. It's such an easy trip for us, we need to come up more often.

As always, it was great watching Joe, Kremin and Brian play together. Serious mind-meld shit going on the way you guys set things up on the court. I had a fun time playing you guys, even though it was a short one... sorry we didn't give you more of a fight! I also tried to catch every game that Jonny Midwest's team played... he's exciting to watch because he always seems to be in multiple places at once. Just when you think he's not going to get there, BOOM, there he is, and he just scored on your ass!

{}------- lexington -------{}

{}------- lexington -------{}

Yeah props to jonny midwest for rolling with a pick up team and to them doing better than my team and others.

No kidding. We had his team down two goals at five minutes and they came back and beat us 5-4. Serious boy wonder shit going on there. Awesome guy and I can't wait to play him again.

A late thanks: Elton, Eric, Lee, house of gracious and beautiful ladies who offered to cook us all breakfast, you all were first class, top-notch and incredibly selfless hosts. The tournament went without a hitch, the beer was free-flowing, games were well organized and officiated (tireless, uncomplaining eric), and there were multiple offers of places to sleep. I was particularly impressed that some of the Dayton players didn't play in the tournament just so that they could focus on hosting and organizing. Thanks for a kick-ass weekend and a great tournament. See you soon in Dayton!

Congratulations to MKE for a well deserved win, and to Madison for making them fight for it. That game was a thrill to watch.

Lexington and COMO were a pleasure to watch too, Lex was the dark horse favorite & I wouldn't be surprised to see them winning a couple tournaments later this summer or next season. And Columbia showed up in force, with a bunch of teams and some skilled, enthusiastic play. Hope to see you all real soon.

Thank you, Elton and Lisa, for housing all the festivities night after night. We pulled it off without a hitch, but not without some hitches along the way.

It couldn't have turned out better, and it was great to meet so many people from so many different cities... and to see how much many players and teams have improved since I watched them play in Chicago, last summer!

I'm glad everyone had a good time:) And thank you, Cincinnati, for cooking me a delicious breakfast in thanks for being your hostess!

And thanks to Max and Johnny Midwest for picking me up when my planned team fell apart right at registration. I had a blast!

Reuben, one of my favorite tournament shirts, thanks again.

A late and final thanks to everyone who drove and drove to come out to this weekend of mallets and bruises.

A bike shop that sponsored the event and provided funding for your food, roll:, had some coupons at the event that that I don't think everyone received.
To anyone who played in the tourney or attended, you have at your disposal, a discount for 20% of Bern helmets and Fabric Horse items.

I don't know if it was the first time ever for a bike polo tourney, but it was the first time I had seen sudden death over time start with a joust. That was a great rule add.

Thanks again to Dayton.

Should we wait a while and start a new thread to take bids for the next Mid Wests? I overheard some people talking like the Champeenships should stay twice a year. We voted a the 5ths to make it annual, but it was a much smaller group than was in Ohio.

I'm all for having them stay twice yearly.

CoMO is interested in hosting, btw (to whom that may concern). Hopefully we can pull some of the Oklahoma teams (and any other western teams that pop up between now and then) this way since we're on a different geographic extreme than Ohio.

SUCK TOWN POLO

The Co-Ed tourney was the first i saw this happen and i love it.

One of the courts was doing this in Boton at the ESPI 4. sadly not the court that our team played on losing off a shot from the first possession after the OT started.

We were talking with milwaukee on the way home and since the decision to hold midwesterns in ohio was based on cities that failed to represent at the tourney we want to keep that tradition alive. So the next midwests will be held in Normal, IL or bismarck north dakota.

Anyway, i think that twice year tournament is a bit much. Especially if we want to the tournament to grow into something were it is one of the top tourneys to travel too. I would like to see the tournament held yearly in the fall. It seems that the spring season is a little too packed in terms of tournaments and in the fall you get better weather and fewer conflicts.

Would love to travel to CoMO for a tourney. Also would love to see some michigan teams show up.

Let's bring the trouney to Michigan!

yeah lets do it in comstock at the bell's brewery

It's too bad nobody in that area plays polo. Bell's does sponsor a good cycling team though.

Kalamazzo isn't a bad place to hold one, and it's nowhere near as humid as Dayton.

Lexington Bike Polo OG - Retired (Still show up and heckle though)

That's my hometown. Count me in.

Too bad no one else from Michigan showed up at the 6th Midwests though, huh?

Where were all these Michigan players when I was asking if they were gonna come to dayton ?

So is this to become the new tradition of assignment? Whoever doesn't show up to this Mid Wests has to host next years? I kinda like it.

Indianapolis didn't show either, and it's more central.

we and the MAD guys were joking about this on the car ride home from Dayton and i'm sure that jonny meant it as a total joke as well. i don't really like the idea of someone hosting the midwest if they've never even been to a tournament. first, other cities who've been showing at tourneys in the midwest and have yet to host one, such as Lexington, Minneapolis, and CoMo are much more deserving of that honor... rather than saying, "i've never seen you at a tourney, only know of you because you talk shit on bikepolo.ca, so you get to host the next midwest." <-- wtf. second, with the exception of this most recent midwest, it has always been on the winning team to decide if they want to host or pass it to another city... i'd have to discuss it with brian and krem, but i think one of the three aforementioned cities should host. (personally i'd like to see minneapolis host cuz those guys are awesome and funny and minne is a fun town... if a bit outta the way)

i vote for the best court leaning towards mpls it has to be at there hockey rink

Hockey rink. Very good.

Krem's right about facilities. Mpls is obviously good on that front. So, Lex, CoMo - whatchyou got?

Anyway, we're all waiting for your decision MKE. Don't fuck this up.

chicagobikepolo.com

I think that lexington, como and mpls would all make great locations. But i would love to see milwaukee host it.

BGSG Hardcourt Tournament July 25th will be a good opportunity to see Lexington's facilities in action.

Facility wise, Columbia's pretty nice. We have a hockey rink that's actually larger than Dayton's, so we could feasibly divide that in half and have two games simultaneously. Or use the rink to its full extent and set up a smaller court somewhere else (like the adjacent parking lot) and have tournament play work out akin to Dayton. (It's also about 8 feet from one of the state's largest concrete skateparks, so you can bring your board and fuck up your knees trying to skate.)

As a town goes, Columbia's great. We just recently pushed past the 100,000 people mark, so we're tiny. Which is great. You can ditch your car somewhere and not have to touch it the rest of the weekend. It's damn easy to bike from one end of the town to the other in less than 15 minutes, and I can think of at least two bars that have dollar PBR and Stag every night.

Here is the Mayor of Columbia playing bike polo. This town's designed for this shiiiiit. We'd gladly take the midwest in and nuzzle you like small puppies in our collective bosom.

SUCK TOWN POLO

We also have 3 bike shops in town, great food (Mexican/Indian/Vietnamese/SUBSHOPPPPP), and the city is fairly bike friendly (when compared to other cities at least). We also should have plenty of housing available. OH and we have Flat Branch MICROBREWERY hell yeah http://www.flatbranch.com/beers.asp

I vote CoMo or Lexington.

Do I get a vote?

Lexington would be happy to host a Midwest tourney, but probably not this next one. Maybe we'll try the one after next.

We're getting ready to host our first real tournament (see Bluegrass State Games thread), and while we have a nice two-court facility, it's definitely far from perfect, or at least what everyone is used to playing on. In the coming month, we're going to be working hard at getting some type of boards up around the perimeter of our courts because right now all we have is 12ft high chain-link. The ball gets stuck sometimes, and can be a pain in the ass. Personally, I think something to keep the ball in play is essential for a tournament situation, and I'd rather make sure we have all of that in place before we commit to another tourney.

That said, I'd love to see something happen in COMO. Sounds like a great place to visit. From Drew's description, Columbia and Lexington sound a lot alike.

Well, brian is miles away from civilization, but Minneapolis is his home town so I'm sure he' d love to see of hosted there.

Not to keep drilling home the point, but I'm really interested in having Columbia host the next Midwests. And it'll take some planning, so we'd best get a start if it does wind up being in Columbia.
But still, I'm yet to see Minneapolis make a case for itself. Minneapolis...? I like your town, what's your polo situation like?
(I suppose we could move this to a new thread to reach some sort of consensus.)

SUCK TOWN POLO

CoMo has the drive. Look. Drew's posted fuckin' TWICE.

hell yeah we've got the drive. and its a cheeeaaap place to visit.
i can't think of a single downside to this.

Mpls didn't show up in Dayton. Give it to CoMo.

Huh? What's happening? Where am I?

My head is too full of BFF stuff right now to think straight. One thing I know, is that the COMO guys I've met are pretty cool. They'd be even cooler if they drove 500 miles to Minneapolis to play in a co-ed tournament. :D

Wherever the next Midwests are being held I will do my damnedest to get there.
